Truck Maker Volvo Returns to Profit in Q3 →
STOCKHOLM (AP) Swedish truck maker AB Volvo said Oct. 22 it returned to a profit in the third quarter, helped by strong demand in Brazil, India, China and Russia as well as a rebound in its mature markets. The Goteborg-headquartered group reported a net profit of $421 million in the quarter, in contrast with last year’s loss. Revenues soared 32 percent. Volvo said almost half of its total sales came from outside its traditional markets, including Brazil, India, China and Russia, but that both North America and the European truck market were performing well, too. This fall, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will implement the Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010) program, which includes more stringent penalties for violations. This program will make truck maintenance even more important, according to Dick Von Lehman, Kenworth PremierCare national sales manager of service. “Under CSA 2010, truck drivers will now receive points on their record for such things as leaky wheel seals or other minor defects,” Von Lehman noted. ALLENTOWN, Pa (AP) Mack Trucks is recalling 75 laid-off workers to its Lehigh Valley manufacturing plant. The truck maker said it’s benefiting from improving demand for highway vehicles. Company spokesman John Walsh said the recall is effective June 21. It will bring the number of workers at the plant to 750.
