Volvo Trucks North America has announced enhancements to Volvo Connect, its digital fleet management platform and the remote programming offering for both the new Volvo VNL and Volvo VNR as well as legacy product offerings.
Volvo Trucks will now streamline over-the-air updates for customers by proactively sending software updates to opted-in fleets, ensuring seamless deployment across the rolling population of trucks. Through the power of remote programming, Volvo Trucks can continuously improve the efficiency and performance of a customer's truck, providing additional value well beyond the initial sale, according to Volvo.
Fleets that opt in to proactive updates will no longer need to manually check for pending software updates. This will provide fleet managers the peace-of-mind that their trucks are receiving timely updates without having to take them out of service. On average, fleets with fully updated truck populations experience a 24 percent reduction in unplanned stops compared to trucks in non-updated fleets, according to Volvo.
In addition to the proactive software updates, changing vehicle parameter settings will be available in Volvo Connect. The new features in the Volvo Connect portal allow customers to directly adjust the most common parameter settings, creating a more streamlined experience and putting the fleet manager in the driver's seat.
"The all-new Volvo VNL, our most connected truck ever built for the North American market, set a new industry standard," said Magnus Gustafson, vice president of connected services, Volvo Trucks North America. "Now, we enable customers to use the power of that connectivity to adjust parameters through the Volvo Connect portal. This offers significant fleet management value, ensuring optimal truck operation. Starting with series production of the all-new Volvo VNR, we'll transition to proactive software updates, easing fleet managers' workload and maintaining peak vehicle performance."
With the enhancements to the Volvo Connect portal, customers will now be able to modify and deploy the most commonly adjusted parameters such as maximum road speed, pedal maximum, cruise maximum and various idle shutdown settings. These changes can be applied to specific trucks or across the entire fleet through the Volvo Connect portal. Customers can also create and save templates, receiving alerts if a truck deviates from the designated template, according to Volvo.
"Fleet managers want their trucks to stay updated without added complexity," said Gustafson. "With proactive remote programming updates and new parameter features in Volvo Connect, we're giving customers the best of both worlds — effortless automatic updates where possible and direct control when desired."
According to Volvo, Over-the-air software updates take place seamlessly while trucks are being loaded or during driver breaks, minimizing operational disruption. Volvo Connect combines AI-driven insights with support from Volvo Trucks' 24/7 Uptime Center to provide a balance of white-glove service and self-service flexibility, ensuring fleets stay optimized with the latest software updates.
Launched in October 2023, Volvo Connect serves as a centralized hub for fleet management, integrating vehicle safety, fuel efficiency, location insights, diagnostics and remote programming tools. With the addition of self-serve remote programming features, fleet managers gain greater control over their vehicles' software and parameter settings while maintaining full visibility into update progress — helping them ensure that updates are installed promptly by drivers or technicians. Customers still have the option to call Volvo Action Service to facilitate the updates. Volvo Trucks remains dedicated to serving customers by continuously improving the connected services offering and enhancing remote programming capabilities designed to continually optimize trucks to maximize customer productivity and profitability, according to Volvo.
According to Volvo, all updates are facilitated through Volvo Trucks' factory-installed 4G Telematics Gateway and are available on all new Volvo trucks, as well as supported legacy models. Every new Volvo truck includes two years of Volvo Uptime Care, featuring remote programming, remote diagnostics, ASIST, and Volvo action service on top of location services, reports and analytics, all streamed via the Volvo Connect portal.
